Torrential rain and thoroughly miserable conditions did not dampen the spirits of the determined and motivated Wetherby squad.
Wetherby kicked off into the Rishworthians half and the boys instantly rose to the challenge. Some excellent rucking and mauling from all players - we just need to keep passing to the wing more.
Today’s match was the first time Wetherby have played with contested 6 man scrums and it was very evident that the hard work and training on Thursday nights is really starting to pay off. Max S-M was working hard in the scrum team to get the ball passed out before sadly injuring his neck and being taken off. Hopefully he will make a speedy recovery and be back next week (update: Max has been checked and has a sprain to his neck, and should recover quickly). The remaining forwards played excellent, hard rugby, not just in the contested scrums but also in the rucks and mauls with Bryce, Wilf, Fergus and Seth noticeably all on fire.
The backs ran lots of good lines and straight running to puncture through the Rishworthian defence with two fabulous tries from Jakub who flew down the wing and five for Jack who made the most of every opportunity when the ball came his way. The teamwork showed by all the lads was evident with Robert generously passing Alfie the ball on the try line to score. Other brilliant tries scored by Bryce, Max H and a fast run down the wing gave Connor a well earned try. Ollie and Alec put in some strong tackles in the centre to pass the ball out and both had some long runs towards the line.
It was impressive to see how determined and motivated the whole team was. A great second win for the second match of the season and fabulous to see a large Wetherby squad turn up on an incredibly wet Wetherby morning.
