Wetherbystarted strong and the inclusion of Liam Hogan in at number 8 was telling from the start and it didn’t take long for him to run in the first of his two tries, slipping three tackles along the way to pop it under the posts. Matty Finch duly slotted the conversion.
Within ten minutes Liam was over again for his second with a powerful run. Our back row was running the game at this point. A minor lapse of concentration let Rowntrees in for their first try of the match, but we responded with power and determination and the final delivery was delivered by Alex Fraser for a fantastic individual try powering his way through and over the line, and with Matty Finch supplying the coup des gras with the extra points.
Some wholesale changes were made at the start of the second half, and while we were adjusting to this Rowntrees scored twice bringing the score to 19 all. And then followed a tense ten minutes, but our pack became the deciding factor winning scrum after scrum against the head, then Levi Colgan ran in another powerful try after great forward build up.
Finally with 2 minutes to go we were camped inside their 5m line, they knew it was all or nothing and so did we. Rowntrees won a scrum in their own 22, we then promptly won it against the head, quick thinking from Mickey Youlden set Harry Kaye in for a try down the blindside. A fantastic victory that was hard fought against great opposition.
Final Score Wetherby Crusaders :29 – Nestle Rowntrees :19
