Wetherby Crusaders beat York 3s

Sean Lally12 Dec 2016 - 21:56

Three tries by Sean Lally as Wetherby beat York 3s 27-7

After naming 12 players on Wednesday night and managing to get up to 20 by Friday, the Crusaders managed to name 17 players by Saturday lunch time to face York 3s who had beaten them comfortably in there last encounter.

Wetherby kicked off and forced an early penalty just outside the 22 due to York holding on. Liam Harrison dragged the effort well wide.

The early encounters were played deep in the York half and soon Wetherby found themselves on the score board. The forwards worked the ball well down the right hand side. The ball was flung out to the backs who had a two man overlap. Doing what Foxy does best he showed the full back an outrageous dummy to score in the corner. Harrison missed the conversion. 5-0.

Wetherby continued to apply pressure and won a line out from a penalty on the York 5. The line out was dropped but Mike Youlden picked it up and the forwards mauled him towards the line. Lally broke off from the back and grounded the ball but the referee claimed not to see the grounding and awarded Wetherby a 5m penalty for a high shot on Youlden. Youlden tapped the penalty and Lally crashed the ball over for his opening try. Once again the conversion was missed. 10-0

Wetherby soon scored again. After forcing a penalty in the York 10m line. Debutant Mikey took a quick tap and made good ground before popping the ball to Lally who broke through two tackles then stepped the full back to score under the posts. 17-0.

From kick off Wetherby scored the try of the game. Youlden fielded the kick off before flinging the ball wide to Lally who put it out to centers AJ Hills and Foxy. Steart made good yards down the wing before the ball came back to Fox who popped it back inside for Hills to score. 22-0.

The last 5 minutes of the half York started to get back into the game and scored a converted try under the posts.

Halftime score was 22-7.

The second half was a pretty drab affair. Wetherby were there own worst enemies and continued to give York territory after penalty after penalty.

Minns was binned for a high tackle but Wetherby held out York.

During a rare venture into the York halfor, Lally bagged his hatttrick after taking a quick tap penalty after the tacklers wouldn't release him after a pick and go off the back of the ruck.

The game ended 18 minutes early due to an injury to the York Hooker.

Final score was Wetherby 27-7 York 3s
