Lack of contested scrums cost Crusaders victory.

Lack of contested scrums cost Crusaders victory.

Mods arrived with 14 players so prop Rich Watts volunteered to give Mods a full 15 to start the game. Nice one Watty!

Unfortunately Mods still didn't have a proper front row so the whole game would have uncontested scrums. This was far from ideal for Wetherby who had 6 front row players who had been dreaming of scrum domination all week long. Mods on the other hand had a lightweight mobile set of forwards and without the Crusaders being able to grind them down at the set piece they were able to use their energy competing at the breakdown.

Despite this Wetherby started brightly and went ahead after 4 minutes when a ruck turnover was moved wide quickly with scrum half Kai looping round and outpacing the Mods defence. The conversion was missed from out wide.

Old Mods hadn’t really threatened but they scored with their back line breaking through the centre of the Wetherby defence and the fullback scored under the posts. With the conversion successful Mods took the lead 5-7.

Mods then extended their lead with a similar try. This time the conversion was missed. 5-12.

Wetherby picked up the pace with Kai, Will Jefferson and Nathan combining down the left and winning a penalty. Dave Harrison took a neat inside pass from Little to barge his way through and score. Again the conversion was missed making the half time score 10-12.

At half time the Crusaders agreed that they needed to attack more through the forwards and use some muscle to tie in the Mods pack. This worked almost immediately with some strong mauling and driving runs ending with prop Peter Franks going over for a try. The conversion was missed but Wetherby had the lead 15-12.

The Crusaders were now dominant with the forwards driving well and backline looking dangerous. Mods attacks were being met with solid tackling and aggressive work on the ground was resulting in turnovers with Will Cayton and Kai both prominent.

Jordan Picker then fielded a poor clearance kick and put Kai into space, he scorched around the Mods cover defence and down the touchline before grounding the ball under the posts running 70 yards for a fine individual score. The conversion was successful and Wetherby had a ten point lead 22-12.

The Crusaders then seemed to switch off and Mods were back in the game. A charge down gave Mods a converted try to bring the score to 22-19. The Crusaders were now struggling to contain the lively Mods backs and only a couple of last ditch tackles stopped further scores.

With around 5 minutes to go Mods opted to kick for goal to attempt to level the scores. The attempt was pretty horrible and well wide but Wetherby didn't clear up and Mods had a scrum close to the posts. With the scrums uncontested Wetherby couldn't get hold of the ball and after a couple of minutes of pressure some slick handling by the Mods backline resulted in an unconverted try. 22-24.

The Crusaders couldn't force a score to win the game and were left feeling that they really should have won this game. The front row will have to make do with dreaming about scrummaging for another week.
