Wetherby show fight with 11 men

Sean Lally30 Nov 2022 - 21:14

Will Jefferson cements his spot as best ginger at club

For the first time in what seems like an eternity the barmy army travelled with a squad of 11 to Yarnbury, thanks to some late dropouts. You didn’t think I was going to skip over these dropouts did you. Instead of naming and shaming lets have a little guess of who I’m describing (results will be released next week):

  • Dropout A – told coach he was back in town. Must’ve woken up in the amazon rain forest because suddenly he had bad phone connection and stated the words ‘I will call you back’ well that call never came so lets hope he made it out the jungle alive.
  • Dropout B – ‘Ok don’t really understand what happened? Just met some lads from back in day and had a good laugh’. If you didn’t get a 4am missed call from him maybe you should question your relevancy.
  • Dropout C – apparently putting out fires is more important than a friendly away at Yarnbury.
  • Dropout D – ‘na na na na na na heyyyyyyy goodbye’

Anyway ,Yarnbury leant the boys in red and white some players, one of which happened to be their best winger, Jack Wray after the game was desperately trying to recruit him considering Olly Hills’ transfer to the 10 jersey.

Wetherby started strong with line breaks from Will Jefferson and James Ward, the ball was effortlessly passed through the backline to give the Yarnbury/Wetherby winger his first try. With regular kickers away from duty, Sam Hardman the man of moment stepped up, Hardman has been working with first team kicker Yates so he was the obvious choice, unfortunately the conversion dropped slightly short but a solid effort.

The remainder of the first half saw no team dominate with Yarnbury kicking to the backfield of Scurr and Yarnbury/Wetherby unnamed winger the Weth were able to counterattack but lacked the finishing venom we have seen in previous games. Half time 5-0 Weth.

The second half kicked off and Wetherby were quickly into their rhythm. A lineout in Yarnbury’s half gave Weth a chance to try the old classic BINGO move with the ball passing through hands once again Hills made a man miss showing why he is the modern day fly half and passed it once gain to Mr no name winger who scored another try.

Some other notable moments were James Ward’s backwards box kick which sure made everyone laugh. David Lister once again being the turnover machine that he was put on this planet to be and last but not least Sam Hardman with a big carry up the middle nearly scoring his first try of the season.

Unfortunately Yarnbury unleashed their full-back who was what I can only describe as rapid and too good, he made the Weth defence look silly at times and managed to score 3 tries in the space of 5 minutes.

But the Weth always have fight, with 5 minutes remaining Hills received the ball off a lineout and skipped round a few defenders, with a man overlap and an almost certain try he passed the ball to the unnamed winger (yes again) only for the pass to be called forward. I am not even going to comment on this decision.

But Weth still had fight a muscular carry from Mackenzie Scurr saw Weth desperately close to the the try line, Bryn Kicthing got them inches close with another colossal carry, only for the man of the moment Lister to be held up on the try line and the game be called over. 22-10 to the Yarnbury. A valiant effort from Wetherby who came with 11 men and if they took their chances properly could’ve easily won the game.

With no MOTM or DOTD taking place after I will award them myself. For man of the match, it has to be Will Jefferson who has relentless in D all day not letting the Yarnbury centres gain any momentum. DOTD goes to James Ward for his backwards box kick and on field tantrum sorry Wardy you did have a good game at 9.
