A Perfect End To A Perfect Season

A Perfect End To A Perfect Season

Sean Lally14 May 2015 - 18:46

Wetherby completed their fantastic and probably unsurpassed season adding the Yorkshire Silver Trophy to their league Championship Crown.

In the end it was a close game. Wetherby had the upper hand earlier on but as it wore on Northallerton came more and more into the game.

Wetherby took the lead with a penalty by Conner Sheridan after 4 minutes. Continuing to play the brand of open football they have used all season they looked the more likely to score which they did after 16 minutes. Following some great tackles Wetherby broke from their own 22 for Myles Oates to score to which Conner Sheridan added the conversion.

The enormous crowd of Wetherby supporters thought they had gone further ahead when Conor Sheridan crossed after some good interplay amongst the backs. They were disappointed however when it was adjudged that he had dropped the ball over the line.
Northallerton came back immediately with a penalty for the Reds not rolling away and they followed up just before half time with a try from a rolling maul. So the half time score was 10 - 8 to the Reds.

The second period was dominated by North's forwards particularly in the line out. However following a rare win of their line out the Wetherby pack put a lot of pressure on the opposition. When stopped they swung the ball out wide to the left for Myles Oates to score. Sheridan's conversion kick hit the post and came back out. A further penalty by the Reds extended their lead to 10 points but Northallerton hit back immediately with another try but missed the conversion.

So the final 25 minutes was dominated by the North's pack. The Red's pack and defence were however up to the challenge playing brilliantly. The pressure mounted in the last 10 minutes and the large Wetherby following of supporters were chewing their nails but they need not have worried as this complete team did what they have done all season and applied themselves in all phases of the game.
Jubilation abounded amongst players and supporters with a victory which was hard earned but completed a perfect unbeaten season with 27 straight victories.
