Wetherby's second visit to Sandylands was much harder than the first. A muddy pitch made handling very difficult for both sides who put on an absorbing contest though littered with mistakes.
Skipton went off strongly and it was fully 20 minutes before Wetherby got in to Skipton's half of the field. The home defence was excellent, particularly in midfield making life very difficult for Wetherby to break through.
The Reds finally broke the stalemate after 28 minutes when Alex Dus kicked a penalty . Wetherby now exerted forward pressure and went very close to scoring on several occasions but Skipton's tigerish defence held them out. Alex Dus kicked a second penalty on 35 minutes which was scant reward for the Reds pressure.
The forward battle continues in the second half and Wetherby finally crossed the try line when Rob Adair got over following a maul. Neither side seemed to be able to gain the upper hand and Wetherby's unbeaten run looked in jeopardy but they dug deep and emerged to string a few passes together. Winger Jack Kaye was on the end of the movement and with very lttle room he left three defenders in his wake to score a super try which Alex Dus converted.
Skipton came back fiercely and with 10 minutes to go scored a good forwards try which was converted to bring the score to 18 - 7.
Former club Captain Danny Warden had come on as substitute
but returned to the touchline with a yellow card very quickly. This left the Reds with only 13 men causing them heavy pressure. However the match was settled when Barney Roberts intercepted a Skipton attack and raced the full length of the field to score.
So their toughest game so far this season but the victory puts them through to the semi finals of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy.
They will enjoy the rest over the festive break after this hard game.
