Underdogs come out on top.

Underdogs come out on top.

Wetherby went to Thorne as the underdogs expecting a much sterner test than they have had in recent games.

However playing against a side from a division higher who have won most of their games this year Wetherby showed just how much they have improved this season putting in a terrific performance,

They were unable to utilise their usual free scoring back line due to the atrocious weather conditions. So it was going to be a forwards battle . The Reds pack were magnificent. They overpowered Thorne in the scrum frequently pushing the home side all over the park.

Wetherby started badly giving away a series of penalties s which enabled Thorne to take the lead with a try. Thorne continued to have the upper hand for the first quarter of the game but the Red's defence held them out, After 30 minutes the Wetherby pack created a position from which they scored a push over try which was converted from wide out by Connor Sheriden. Before half time Wetherby produced the killer blow when a they put Johnny Wheatley through a gap in midfield and he outpaced the home defence for a converted try. Connor Sheriden converted and then added a penalty to send the Reds in 15 points to 5 up at half time.

The rain came down even harder making handling very difficult and Thorne who put in a lot of effort made mistakes which Wetherby took advantage of with their dominant scrum. They denied the hosts any space who kept infringing until the Referee ran out of patience and awarded penalty try which was converted. In the latter stages of the game Thorne managed to breach the visitors defence with a try but In reply the Reds took advantage of a dropped pass and hacked on downfield . Following up were 3 Wetherby players and it was Barney Roberts who got the touchdown.

This was the most complete performance of the season. Tactically they were very good playing to their strengths up front and defending well. So the remain unbeaten this season and look forward to going to Skipton in the quarter finals of the competition.

Their next league game is away to Hornsea next week.
