A hard earned but deserved win at Leeds Corinthians confirms Wetherby as League Champions

On a fresh and windy day Wetherby were subjected to an early onslaught by the Corinthians committed forwards. However the Wetherby defence has conceded on average only 5 points in their 18 undefeated league games.. So it proved again with some excellent defence early on.

Wetherby went ahead with a Sheriden penalty after 10 minutes which was countered by a Corinthian penalty. The Reds shifted into attacking mode and went on the attack, having weathered the early storm. The forwards attacked the right corner then the ball was spread wide to winger Trotman who scored a super try on the left. which Sheriden converted well.

Indeed they should have scored more points but they wasted several try scoring chances and Corinthians were defending well.
The second half scoring got under way with the Reds forwards gaining the upper hand. Rob Adair scored from a pushover and Sheriden converted. Shortly after A J Hills burst through the home defence and made 30 yards. Good support was on hand. and Tom Edwards crossed for a converted try.

Leeds were struggling to contain Wetherby but they continued to give away penalties mainly for handling in the ruck which earned them a yellow card but denied the Reds good quick ball. The last try was the best of the game. Will Jefferson fielded a Leeds clearing kick and ran the ball back linking with Sheriden before taking a return pass to touch down under the posts, Sheriden kicked the goal and the final sore was 31 - 3. A fitting win for the Championship against a side who have proved hard to beat in recent years.

Hornsea visit Grange Park next week after which no doubt there will be a Club Celebration !

Despite their success in the league Wetherby are preparing for their Silver Trophy game at Grange Park against Old Modernians on the 14th March where good support form the Town would be appreciated.
