In a game dominated by a howling gale blowing down the hill at York Railway Institute's ground an open expansive game was never in prospect.
York started the game playing up hill and against the gale but for the first ten minutes they were camped in the Wetherby 22. The Reds defence held out well and following a clearance kick they were awarded a penalty which Connor Sheriden scored from. York came back strongly playing a good short passing game. They forced their way over from a quick tap penalty after 13 minutes.
Wetherby were unable to take much advantage from the elements or slope though going close on several occasions but mistakes and stout RI defence meant the score remained the same until half time at 5 - 3 to York.
In the second half Wetherby improved despite facing the strong wind. It took them only a minute of the second period to gain the lead with a well worked try down the right. They went further ahead with a pushover try following sustained pressure and a couple of near misses. They increased the lead on 60 minutes when Myles Oates scampered over following good forward pressure.
York were not finished however and were rewarded with a converted try coming from hard work by their forwards. There was no time left for them to score again and Wetherby went away with the points and their supporters with near frostbite.
So a close call though Wetherby had the edge where it mattered , the scrum was on top for most of the game and they defended well
though York may think otherwise.
The next league game is next Saturday the 17th against Halifax Vandals at grange Park.
