A HARD EARNED VICTORY....

A HARD EARNED VICTORY....

Wetherby continued their winning streak with a hard earned win over Halifax at Grange Park.

Wetherby continued their winning streak with a hard earned win over Halifax at Grange Park. Halifax came with the game plan to spoil the hosts possession which they did but conceded 18 penalties in the process.

The Reds chose a forwards game which they carried out to good effect. Their scrummage was dominant throughout the game. Conor Sheridan opened the scoring with a penalty which signaled Wetherby launching strong pressure for the next 15 minutes. Following numerous scrums George Gilbert scored from a pushover. Wetherby seldom let the ball flow but on a rare occasion that they did the attacked down the left then back inside and a clever kick by Myles Oates enabled Jack Kaye to win the race for the touchdown which Conor Sheridan converted.
Right on half time Wetherby won the ball by destroying the Halifax scrum and Rob Adair pounced on a loose ball to score from close range again Conor Sheridan converted.

So the half time score was 22 - Nil but Halifax came out strongly in the early part of the second half and enjoyed their best period of the match. They scored a try from a crafty chip over the Wetherby defence. This stirred the Reds into action and Conor Sheridan scythed through the visitors defence from 30 meters out to score .
They kept the pressure on the visitors choosing to scrum at every opportunity which paid off after 55 minutes when Will Dutton muscled his way over for a converted try. The latter part of the game continued mostly in the Halifax 22 and the final score came from a charged down clearance kick which enabled Tom Edwards to touchdown.

So Wetherby march on with another bonus point win to take maximum bonus points from their 12 league games. Coach Mike McHugh was well satisfied by the performance. ' They came to spoil our game and made it difficult for us but we had the answers. It was a very satisfactory performance ' he said.

Next weekend Wetherby return to Skipton this time for the Yorkshire Silver Trophy quarter final tie.
