Wetherby travelled to Wensleydale on Saturday expecting a close game, the Dalesmen having drawn against Wetherby’s closest title rivals Leeds Corinthians recently.
Wetherby were almost at full strength with Liam Hogan returning from suspension and Nick Oates and Captain James Gibson returning from injury.
Wensleydale started well and mounted an attack on the Wetherby line from the kick off and landed a penalty following a Reds infringement. It was the last time they were to score.
Wetherby responded with a try by Will Jefferson 2 minutes later converted by Alex Dus. The Reds then went on the rampage, good ball distribution from fly half David Adair and telling breaks from Tom Hicks, George Gilbert and Tom Edwards set up trys for Will Dutton, Rob Adair, Tom Bottomley , Andrew Trotman and a second by Will Jefferson all except one converted by Alex Dus.
Wetherby played up the slope and into the wind in the second half and Wensleydale defended well helped by several Wetherby mistakes, the third quarter of the game was scoreless but as the Dalesmen tired the Reds once again found first gear with a further try from Tom Bottomley, two from Rob Adair who completed a hat trick and one from Liam Hogan rounding the game off. There was only one conversion by Rob Adair, Alex Dus having to retire injured. Myles Oates switching to full back in his absence caused the Wenseydale defence many problems. The final score was 62-3 Wetherby’s best league score of the season. They have also now played two games without conceding a try.
