After last week’s exciting performance Wetherby were hoping to bounce back but they were lethargic upfront and disjointed in the backs. With the wind in their faces Wetherby attempted too many long floating passes and cold hands forced many mistakes.
There was little real action in the first half though the Reds did try to run the ball but the Oaks forwards had slightly the upper hand in the rucks and mauls starving Wetherby of the ball.
With the wind behind them Wetherby had by far the better territory in the second period but still they made mistakes. When they did make breaks they either lacked support or died unnecessarily with the ball.
However in the 65 minutes the Oates boys combined to open the scoring. A box kick by Nick Oates was chased by Myles Oates and when the Sheffield defender made a hash of fielding the ball Oates (minor) grabbed the ball and reached over. Playing with more confidence now the Reds continued to attack.
They blew one chance when a two man overlap was a scorned but on the final play the ever busy Elliot Griffiths burst through to enable Andy Trotman to score a converted try.
The victory pushed Wetherby back up into third place in the league and they have a Saturday off from league activity next week to recover from their hangover from the Otley game last week.
