Both teams were determined to attack and the game ebbed and flowed in exciting fashion.
Wetherby went three points down when a questionable penalty for a foul tackle was kicked by the home side. In the early stages Wetherby were on top with the scrummage being very effective.
However the hosts did show their offloading game to good effect when they scored a try out wide from the halfway. The Reds increased the pressure and after several scrums and penalties close to the Otliensiens line they went down the blind side for Jack Kaye to score. The half time score was 8 – 5 to the home team.
Playing with the strong wind Wetherby went after points and they seemed to have scored from a brilliant cross field kick by jack Kaye for will Jefferson to score. However to the surprise of everyone the try was disallowed for off side against Jefferson. The Reds got their reward with a penalty by Alex Dus to level the scores and very shortly after he kicked another one to give Wetherby the lead for the first time.
Not surprisingly Otliensiens upped their game and they were particularly effective in the rucks and mauls driving Wetherby off the ball and the crisp backs handling well. Great defence by the Reds kept them out but with 10 minutes to go they surrendered their lead through a penalty and instead of learning by their mistake they committed another infringement to give away another penalty and as it turned out the match.
A really good game between two good sides and a result which effectively makes promotion a big ask for Wetherby however they should be buoyed by their performance against the excellent league leaders. Their opposition at Grange Park this week are Sheffield Oaks who beat them in the away fixture and the Reds are looking for revenge .
