Wetherby up to third in the league after fourth win of January.

Sean Lally27 Jan 2014 - 20:51

Another comprehensive win improved Wetherby’s league position to third in the table.

They wasted no time in scoring when Paul Martinski went in for an early try followed by an Alex Dus penalty . It was hardly a day suited to Wetherby’s free flowing rugby but despite the dreadful conditions they managed to show a large band of former players huddled in the stand just what they are capable of.

After a quarter of an hour the Reds attacked through Conor Sheridan whose speed left defenders for dead before handing on to Andy Trotman who beat the visitors last line of defence to score.
The Mosborough forwards showed their mauling ability and the home forwards had to work hard . The home scrums were solid however but because of the greasy ball their backs were prone to mishandling whilst trying to attack. It was debutant hooker Steve Hoather who showed the way when he burst over from short range to score. Alex Dus was unlucky to see his kick come back off the upright. So the half time score was 18 – 0 and the Reds were good value for that lead.

They increased the lead after only 3 minutes of the second half when attacking down the right Myles Oates had the vision to kick to the opposite corner where Andy Trotman collected the kick and dived over for a converted try. The weather conditions worsened when the wind picked up accompanied by freezing rain. So it was the forwards who had to battle it out. There was little between the sides now but Wetherby pressurised the Visitors line with a driving maul and when the ball emerged Nick Oates passed a neat ball back inside for Tom Edwards to score.

It was Mosborough’s turn now to score as their forwards ground out territory and camped near Wetherby’s line and opened their account with a Penalty try after the Reds suffered a series of penalties for pulling down the maul. They continued to boss the mauls which resulted in a further try. The Reds came back in the latter stages and Alex Dus kicked a penalty to make the final score 33 – 12 and everyone was pleased to hear the final whistle and return to a warm Clubhouse.

So onward and upward for in form Wetherby who next week go to league 3 opponents Northallerton in a Cup Tie which will be an interesting test for them.
