They went 3 points up from an Alex Dus penalty after 6 minutes which vandals equalised soon after. On a heavy pitch, strong breeze on top a Halifax Hill and a greasy ball the rugby was not pretty. However after 35 minutes Myles Oates, recently returned from Australia, brightened things up with a glorious pick up and break from just inside his own half. He put Andy Trotman away but with plenty still to do. He held off 2 defenders to score a great try.
The half time score was 8 – 3 to the Reds. It took only 5 minutes for Wetherby to increase their lead. Nick Oates kicked to touch near the Halifax line where the hosts made a hash of their line out and Mick Youlden pounced on the loose ball to score. A further Alex Dus pen increased the Reds lead further.
Now Wetherby made life very difficult losing 3 players to yellow cards for stupid transgressions so they had to do things the hard way for the next 15 minutes. Skipper James Gibson led the way with some hard tackles with the evergreen Man of the Match Mick Youlden seemingly everywhere making a nuisance of himself. Elliot Griffiths was also prominent alongside George Gilbert and Tom Edwards keeping Halifax out. With their 2 man advantage Vandals hammered away at the visitors line and they finally cracked Wetherby’s defence to score.
Almost immediately the Reds replied when good handling by the backs following a ruck enabled Myles Oates to score. Alex Dus kicked a brilliant conversion from wide out.
So another excellent performance by Wetherby based on their defensive qualities. They await Mosborough at Grange Park next Saturday having improved their league position to fourth with this win.
