Stocksbridge sitting in second position in the league with Wetherby only a few points behind. It turned out to be an enthralling encounter between two closely matched teams.
The hosts started well when following a clean line out ball Connor Sheridan rounded the defence on a 40 meter run and when tackled George Gilbert was on hand to plunge over.
Only minute later Stocksbridge following some sustained attacking the visitors winger was put in the clear and scored wide out.
They went further ahead 5 minutes later when two missed tackles allowed Stocksbridge to score.
The Reds came back now but despite coming close were unable to capitalise. The packs on both sides were working hard but in Wetherby’s case their backs could not find their normal fluidity which left The Reds trailing 5 points to 10 at half time.
The second period continued much as the first though Wetherby did improve their handling. The backs broke away and when Andy Trotman was closed down by the Stocksbridge defence he put in a most intelligent kick which went behind the defence and allowed Connor Sheridan to score. Alas Wetherby’s kicking at goal was off form and and with the missed conversions and penalties they failed to get even. The visitors however kicked 2 penalty goals to go clear.
Wetherby’s coaching staff were pleased with the forwards display which has improved enormously in the past three weeks and that they were able to run the table toppers so close.
They remain fifth in the league at the halfway mark in the season which re-commences in January.
