Halifax however started quicker and after pressure down the right a good forward drive rewarded them with a try after only 3 minutes.
Two minutes later Wetherby hit back with their own converted try by Connor Sheriden. Alex Duss followed up with a successful penalty resulting from a high tackle.
After 20 minutes Tom Edwards intercepted a long Halifax pass and ran almost to the line. There was plenty of support from his pack with Bradley Mason floating a brillant pass to George Gilbert to score, Alex Duss again converting. Though the Reds tried to keep the ball moving there were too many mistakes but they went in at half time leading 17 -8.
Shortly after half time Craig Lovelock attacked in midfield and made he break and found Connor Sheriden up in support to score a well executed try which Alex Duss converted.
The visitors didn’t give up and following another forward drive scored wide out on the right. Wetherby kept on playing attractive rugby and Craig Lovelock was prominent with his deft kicking and control from midfield. From one kick to the corner Wetherby almost scored but the Referee adjudged that the defender beat Jonny Wheatley to the touchdown. Duss kicked a penalty shortly after, continued pressure by Wetherby down the right the ball was spun wide where from an attempted interception by Halifax the ball bounced obligingly for Connor Sheriden to complete his hat-trick. Alex Duss continued a successful afternoon with a further conversion. The game ended with a further try by the visitors and a Wetherby penalty.
This was an encouraging display with Stewart Wrigglesworth and Bradley Mason making a difference up front and Harry Kaye at scrumhalf showing promise.
Wetherby’s three quarters functioned well and enabled them to win a bonus point. Next week the Reds entertain Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Silver Trophy Tie at Grange Park kick off 3pm.
