It took only 3 minutes before Barney Roberts outpaced the Marist defence to score. A 2 try burst soon after saw Sean "Donuts" Lally and James Fox get on the score sheet. Alex Duss converted one try and then kicked a penalty to put The Reds 20 points clear. Marist had a brief spell of pressure and narrowly failed to score when held up over the line by Jack Kaye. Whilst continuing to attack they had a pass intercepted and Barney Roberts ran almost the length of the field for his second try. Another interception saw Jack Kay go a long distance for his try.
In the second half Marist began to play to their strength which was up front . Their heavier forwards playing a short driving game. Though Wetherby defended this well they were short of possession. They had to live on the visitors mistakes and David Adair benefitted twice. Kicking ahead loose balls he managed to win the race to the line despite the attentions of the Marist full back.
There was big difference between the Reds and their visitors from Hull who got the better of the forward exchanges. Wetherby however had too much pace in the backs. It was good to see the return after injury of Andy Trotman, last years leading try scorer along with Sean Lally after eating his way around America.
This was a most welcome return to form for Wetherby whose next league game is away to Old Grovians in 2 weeks time.
The official score is recorded at 40-0 Wetherby scoring 6 tries, however both teams had recorded the result at 42-0 Wetherby scoring 7 tries.
