Wetherby hosted Leeds Corinthians and were sadly short of the kind of spirit shown by the Leeds Corinthians side.
The visitors took the lead after only 6 minutes with a converted try but The Reds hit back 5 minutes later with a good try by Alex Parrish who linked well and darted over.
They then took the lead following an excellent backs move for Jonny Wheatley to score which Alex Duss converted. This was probably the last time that the Wetherby backline clicked as too many times they took the wrong options in midfield. After exchanging penalties the half time score was 15 – 10 to Wetherby.
Corinthians’ team spirit was evident in the second half who worked harder for each other than the home side. They dominated possession by frequently wheeling the Wetherby scrum and regularly holding up their opponent in the tackle and then taking the scrum ball. Leeds were rewarded with a penalty goal and a very smart try by their winger who seeing no defense at home chipped ahead and easily won the race to the try line.
Wetherby were unable to launch any meaningful attacks without possession. That they did get was lost by players trying to do too much individually and inevitably the ball was turned over. They lost the game by 3 points which they might have won had they played with more enthusiasm and team effort and though they earned a bonus point Leeds Corinthians were worthy winners.
Next Saturday Wetherby entertain Thorne in a cup game with a 2.15 kick off.
