HEMSWORTH 26 V WETHERBY 0

James Gibson16 Apr 2012 - 08:34

Though not a very good end to the season the team has played well at times during the league campaign in their first season since promotion finishing in a creditable joint 7th place.

This was an end of season display by Wetherby facing promotion chasing Hemsworth. After the first ten minutes Wetherby were well off the pace for the rest of the first half with their forwards looking tired and weary. Playing downhill and with the wind Wetherby did exert some early pressure but a possible overlap was wasted and a subsequent scrum lost against the head. Alex Fraser put them into a good attacking position with a good kick but it was the home forwards who brought the ball away.

The Hemsworth backline always looked dangerous with their excellent offloading and support play. However their first try came from a chip ahead when their centre scored near the posts and the goal was added. They should have scored again when their scrum half made a great break close to the scrum , chipped ahead and re- gathered and though the support was there some dour defence by Wetherby held them out which included a great tackle by Charles Stringer.

They couldn’t hold out for long though and with the Reds scrum in a mess the hosts drove to the line and scored. When awarded a penalty the home side chose to scrum from which they broke down the blind side to score again. The Referee however missed the persistent obstruction by the home blind side wing forward which occurred throughout the game.

The half time score was 19 Nil and Wetherby should think themselves lucky to have got Nil . They did however even the game up in the second half and managed to keep the score down to just one more try. Despite poor quality ball from the set pieces the Reds backs did cause Hemsworth some problems. It was the home scrum half who scored a brilliant individual try to gain his side the bonus point they needed to secure promotion.

It weas a bad day at the office for Wetherby who also suffered a number of injuries including skipper James Gibson, Alex Parrish, Jack Kaye and Tom Edwards who suffered a broken ankle.
