Wetherby finish with a flourish

Wetherby were looking to finish their home fixtures on a high and so they did. Their attacking style winning out against determined opposition to send the home supporters home happy.

It started badly when they knocked on from the kick off and put themselves under unnecessary pressure. Alex Fraser relieved the situation making 50 meters from a penalty. The Reds applied pressure with good handling and from a line out Liam Hogan muscled his way over to score an unconverted try.

Mosborough took the lead after half an hour when they intercepted a promising Wetherby attack and their centre outpaced the Wetherby defence to score a try under the posts which was converted. The home team soon hit back with a well crafted try. The forwards provided a good clean ball and Alex Fraser served a great little pass to Andy Trotman whose timing and angled run was perfect for him to score a try which Myles Oates converted. The Wetherby backs were really getting into their stride now and were denied a further two scores when their long passes were blown off course by the strong breeze.

Shortly into the second half Wetherby struck with probably the try of the season. Following a pick up the ball was handled by all of the back row forwards, Nick Olte, Liam Hogan and Tom Edwards who handed on to Myles Oates , Andy Trotman and finally Jack Kaye who finished a glorious move. This stung Mosborough into action and using their well drilled forwards put The Reds under a lot of pressure resulting in a penalty for Wetherby going over the top. The visitors kept on hammering at the home line.

They pushed Wetherby back over their line from a home scrum ball and then proceeded to score a deserved push over try. Unfortunately the conversion hit the post and bounced out leaving the score 17 – 15 to The Reds.

Instead of capitulating Wetherby went up a gear. First Jack Kaye confused the visitors defence with his speed and tricky running. After fielding a kick on halfway he found the elusive Andy Trotman in support. After two splendid dummies he put his winger Alex Parrish in at the corner for his debut try. It wasn’t long though before he added to his tally. The irrepressible Liam Hogan made the hard yards and Andy Trotman was on hand to pass to Alex Parrish who had a bit to do but burst over the line from 20 yards.

It was Mosboorough who completed the scoring with a try in the last minute but Wetherby could be well p[leased with their win in a game which was a close scrap at times but their adventurous play and excellent backing up and offloading won through. The victory enabled them to leapfrog Mosborough in the league placings.

The final league game is away to Hemsworth on the 14th April.
