Wetherby’s plan for the game was to move the ball away from the opposition pack and run the ball wherever possible and to concentrate on executing their play with precision.
In the first 15 minutes Wetherby gave the ball away so many times they put themselves under pressure.Failed kick offs and dropped passes allowed Corininthians to dictate the game. Not surprisingly they went ahead. First with a penalty goal for not releasing and then the home centre scythed through a hesitant defence to score an excellent try.
Wetherby worked their way into the game and began to secure their own scrum ball from which Liam Hogan showed his strength and talent making 3 good driving runs, which built up pressure on the home line. The backs moved the ball wide right and when a speculative kick was fumbled by Leeds Tom Bottomley, making a welcome return, grabbed the ball to score. Alex Dus kicked a splendid conversion from the touchline.
The Reds kept up the momentum with Tom Bottomley featuring again but their last pass went astray. Further attacks were spoiled with individuals trying to do too much and just before half time Leedds Corinthians extended their lead with a penalty.
The half time team talk from Coach Wayne Pawson had more effect than at the start and it took only 6 minutes for Wetherby to take the lead. The move began in their 22 and most of the backs handled well. Andy Trotman gave Myles Oates a neat pass and with little room to work in he chipped ahead and Barney Roberts won the chase to score a converted try.
The hosts playing to their strength up front drove the ball to the visitors try line and after a plunge for the line was ruled as held up they scored a push over try to go ahead. Minutes later Myles Oates landed a long range penalty which bounced on the cross bar before going over to regain the lead.
The final quarter belonged to the Reds who threw the ball about, sometimes too wildly. From a kick out by Leeds the ball was fielded by prop Alistair Farrow. He set off dancing his way through tackles before offloading to Tom Bottomley. At the tackle the ball came back to Alex Fraser who stroked the ball into the far corner. The home defence made a mess of dealing with the kick and Myles Oates gratefully dotted the ball down and then converted the try.
With more possession in the second period Wetherby were much more convincing. The introduction of Alex Fraser at half time steadied them and they had a platform to work from. They played some thrilling rugby late on but that precision they needed was missing.
Leeds Corinthians gave a spirited performance despite the lowly league position and gave Wetherby a hard time in the first half.
The final home league game of the season is against Mosborough Kick off 3pm. The incentive to win is that they would finish above Mosborough in the league. They currently lie in 6th position, one above Wetherby.
