It was important to impose themselves on Old Otliensians after surrendering a winning margin to draw with them earlier in the season.
They did this in the scrums from the off which resulted in a breakaway by skipper Gibson and carried on by Le Tissier.
This set the visitors back and the Reds were awarded two penalties and after 12 minutes Liam Hogan sliced through the visitors defence from a tap penalty 35 yards out. Ollie Robertson obliged with the conversion.
Otley hit back strongly and caused Wetherby to lose a man to a yellow card after 3 successive off-sides within the 22.
During this sin bin time the visitors scored wide out and then as if to balance matters they lost a man to a yellow card.
After half an hour the resurgent Dan Simpson scythed through from 45 yards out to score. This followed the Wetherby pack winning a scrum against the head and a pick and drive by James Gibson again. Next Andy Rawson picked up a loose ball and drove into the visitors 22, when the ball emerged from the maul Andy Trotman was on hand to hack on and beat the cover to score.
Shortly after the break Andy Trotman scored a fine individual try dancing his way through the Otley defence and Robertson converted. To everyone’s surprise and with The Reds leading 24- 5 the Referee lent the visitors a hand by tackling Nick Oates(A voice from the crowd suggested that the Ref should pick on someone his own age !)
The game deteriorated now and the Official was given plenty of work by both sides with numerous infringements to whistle up.
The Reds increased their lead when Nick Oates, showing no ill effects from the earlier heavy tackle, put the Impressive James Gibson over for a deserved score. Otliensians now enjoyed their best period of the game and were rewarded with a good try but although they were on the attack for the rest of the game they made too many errors to threaten the home line .
This win improved the Reds league standing to 7th place and they must now wait two weeks for their next league fixture.
