Following last weeks bruising encounter with Harrogate Pythons, Wetherby were without several first team players due to injuries and also those who were missing due top the internationals. Despite this Wetherby picked a team they believed was strong enough to beat mid table rivals Ossett.
It was Ossett who made the brighter start to the game, a good pick and go game from the base of the ruck had Wetherby on the back foot, and a penalty was soon knocked over from a Wetherby offside.
The reds soon hit back though, working there way up to the Ossett try line, good ball retention proved key, with skipper James Gibson and Paul Jefferson being tackled inches shorts, before scrum half Mick Youlden played it blind to Tom Edwards to score. Oliver Robertson starting his first game at fly half added the extras.
Ossett continued to pound the Wetherby line but were unable to score due to a resilient Wetherby defence. Wetherby were able to clear there lines and from a scrum centre field the ball found its way to second row Stewart Wrigglesworth who burst 40 meters downfield with the Ossett players dangling off him, his offload to Alex Parish was messy, but the ball found its way to Dan Simpson to score. Oliver Robertson added the conversion.
Ossett got the try they had deserved in the corner, Wetherby felt they had done enough to push the player into touch but the touch judge said otherwise and the try was converted.
Wetherby continued to pressure the Ossett line, when Ossett tried to run the ball out of defence Wetherby pushed them back over the line, and a sliced clearance kick landed perfectly in the arms of Dan Simpson to score much to his delight.
Wetherby added a further penalty to bring the score at half time to 22-13.
The second half was a rather drab affair, neither side looked like they wanted to score and the game was played between the 22s.
Wetherby were reduced to 14 when Stewart Wrigglesworth was sent to the bin for throwing the ball at a player, and soon both teams had a man sent to the bin for ten following a shoving match in the centre.
Ossett were unable to use the man advantage, but did add a penalty late in the game to secure a losing bonus point.
Both teams will be disappointed with the performance produced but Wetherby will be pleased to finally get a win after 3 close defeats.
