It was a cold am miserable afternoon at Grange Park and the football served up did little to lighten the gloom. The greasy ball seemed too difficult to handle for the two teams.
The visitors, Rodillians surprised Wetherby in the early stages, for a team well below them in the league they gave a good account of themselves. It took the home team a full 20 minutes to get out of their own half. It was veteran Mick Youlden filling in at scrum half who made the first break into visitors territory. The Reds then had a try disallowed when Gyles Seward went over following good work by Liam Hogan and Mike Youlden again. Rodillians almost scored just before the break but were denied thanks to an excellent last ditch tackle by Andrew Trotman.
So at half time there were no points on the board. Wetherby without their regular half backs were unable to get the back line moving effectively and players were reduced to doing their own
thing and as a result their team play suffered. Good defence was the only redeeming feature of this lack lustre display with Nick Olte doing sterling work from blind side and deservedly winning the Man of the Match Award. There was also an encouraging display from young Josh Peace making his debut.
After 60 minutes however the Reds broke the stalemate when the ball was passed successfully through several pairs of hands for Sean Lally to score an unconverted try. Rods hit back swiftly and were unlucky when their winger lost the ball diving over in the corner. However with the light fading fast Andy Trotman brightened up the game with a fine solo try sidestepping his way over to make the game safe.
