It took them 40 minutes to get themselves galvanised into action in front of the best crowd of the season thanks to the grand Re-Union. The first half was littered with mistakes by both sides and apart from a couple of bursts from Nick Whitehead the half was barren of any real football though the Reds kept their discipline.
Wetherby started the second half in a better frame of mind and the support play began to come off. Tom Edwards and Nick Whitehead were denied a score by a deliberate knock on which went unpunished. After 15 minutes of attacks the defence was cracked by Nick Oates who sniped in following a tap penalty. From the kick off Man of the Match Paul Jefferson fielded the ball in the air under pressure for a brilliant catch. Wetherby took the ball up field and from a resulting scrum the Wetherby pack nudged the ball forward for skipper James Gibson to complete the pushover try. Myles Oates converted.
Corinthians re-start kick did not go the required 10 meters and they were punished by a 40 meter clearance kick. Now in an attacking position they spoiled a Corinthian’s scrum take when the hard working Nick Olte robbed the Leeds scrum half and from the ruck Nick Oates got a quick ball away to Myles Oates who had Andrew Trotman on his shoulder. He took a short crisp pass and scorched through the visitors defence for a super try which the big crowd enjoyed enormously.
Showing confidence and flair Wetherby continued to attack in the manner they had done all last season. Their support work was rewarded by some neat interplay in which Sean Lally was twice involved before galloping in for the try. A further score came when Myles Oates broke out from his own half. The move was continued by Andy Trotman and it was Tom Edwards who finished off the move to score a try converted by Myles Oates. The Reds continued the pressure but it was Leeds Corinthians who gallantly hit back with the final score resulting from some excellent handling.
So a convincing return to form in the second half. Wetherby have no league game next week.
