Wetherby went ahead early with a penalty by Andrew Trotman following a promising attack. Ossett responded strongly and their forwards got the upper hand though the home side were not helped when they lost Liam Hogan to the sin bin for 10 minutes. During this time Ossett scored a converted try to take the lead.
At last The Reds strung some passes together and Stu Wrigglesworth went charging through the visitors defence. Wetherby kept up the pressure
and skipper Gibson got held up over the lie, and then Sean Lally was denied a try by illegal means which resulted in the Ossett offender being sin binned. The Reds were unable to make their pressure tell and the trailed by 4 points at half time.
Andrew Trotman slotted over a penalty shortly after the break but Ossett hit back with a well crafted try from a line out close to the home try line.
It continued to be a tight game but Wetherby’s defence held out thanks to sterling work by Nick Olte and Tom Edwards. They seemed to get stronger thanks to their fitness. First Sean Lally crossed the line only for the Referee for some reason not to allow it. However from the ensuing scrum the Reds got the drive on and James Gibson was able to pick up at the base of the scrum and score with only 7 minutes to go. Andrew Trotman converted to to give Wetherby a slim victory.
It was a hard earned win against a capable opposition but as The Reds got on , in the latter stages, they controlled their game better . they were rewarded for their gritty determination and willingness to attack. Next up sees a derby game against Harrogate Pythons.
