The Reds opened up brightly enough with Liam Hogan prominent. In the 7th minute he rescued a ball from the back of a Wetherby scrum and came away from the home 22 with a thundering run to set up Myles Oates for an unconverted try.
It was Hogan again in defence who cleaned out a Grovians ball allowing Andy Gilligan to clear well. Wetherby were unable to improve their first half score due to far too many too many penalties being conceded.
Immediately after half time Wetherby gave away another silly penalty from which Grovians scored. The visitors missed a further penalty but were soon back on the scoresheet with a converted try. They added to this with another converted try shortly after wards when their busy scrum half darted over .
The home side did get some good possession from the lineout where Paul Jefferson was prominent, and also dominated the scrum thanks to props Frank Pitchford and Sean Lally. However the home backs handling was poor with either forward passesor knocks forward allowing the opposition more opportunities. From one such breakdown Grovians showed how it should be done with a slick handling movement which brought a deserved try.
The Reds did hit back late on with a well worked try when Andrew Trotman put a deft kick into the corner for Jack Mudd to pounce on. Myles Oates converted brilliantly from the touchline.
It was a poor second half performance affected by several injuries but poor execution of basic skills and too many penalties allowed the visitors to dominate. The coaching staff have a lot to work on this
Week before going to play Halifax in a further league game.
