Wetherby went into the game having lost their last two competitive fixtures and were looking for a turn around in fortunes. Beautiful rugby conditions met Wetherby in Stanley but a scrappy start to the game unfolded with both teams struggling to hold onto the ball.
Wetherby finally broke the deadlock with Wetherby retaining possession from a scrum, the ball was shipped through the hands of the backs, to Henry Morgan who skipped away from three defenders, side stepped the full back and went in over the line. Andrew Trotman missed the conversion.
The second try came just before half time, the ball once again moved from the dominating forwards and moved out wide, this time Myles Oates used his pace to beat the defense, the full back tried to put Myles into touch illegally but bounced off the Wetherby full back and took no further part in the game. Andrew Trotman missed the conversion.
At half time Wetherby led 10-0.
After the restart Wetherby continued to dominate for a further ten minutes. Man of the Match Liam Hogan getting on the score sheet breaking through 3 or 4 defenders, before Stanley Rodillian's hit back with two tries of there own. Wetherby will be disappointed not to have kept them out.
Wetherby's dominance showed in the last quarter of the game however and ran in a further three tries, Andrew Trotman crossing twice on the left wing through good interplay and offloads from Henry Morgan. Jonny Wheatley added a sixth after good ball play from Myles Oates and Sean Lally drawing in the defenders before setting Wheatley on his way to score from 70 meters.
Jonny Wheatley would have been disappointed not to have a second in the final play of the game, after Stanley knocked on into his hands, he was away to score the try but the referee had blown prematurely.
Wetherby still have a lot of work to do to find last years form, and entertain fellow promotion winners Knaresborough at Grange Park next Saturday.
