The two top teams in the league did not have a fixture and Wetherby took the opportunity to go to the top of their division with both hands giving Rowntrees a lesson in fast all round rugby
Both forwards and backs were far superior to the big Rowntrees side. Showing several changes from last week the Wetherby teamwork ran smoothly and added a further ten tries to their
season’s impressive tally.
The first try came when skipper Taff Olte was first to a loose ball and set Gyles Seward off over the gain line. He offloaded well and the move continued through three pairs of hands to put
Ben Dalby over for James Gibson to convert. Within a couple of minutes Myles Oates scampered over after another good passing movement. The next try came after a strong thrust from
Matt Bartle and another powerful run from Seward which enabled Dan Simpson to score. Simpson scored again when Myles Oates picked up a stray Rowntrees pass. He attacked the home defence before
timing his pass beautifully for Simpson to canter over. He was on the move again to score his hat trick but it was a try made by the forwards with a well controlled rolling maul which made a good 30 yards to set him up.
James Gibson made a further try with one of his galloping runs through the home defence before releasing Simpson for try number four.
It had been one way traffic in the first half and Wetherby had racked up 34 points and they set off in the second period at pace with both Alex Fraser and Ben Dalby stopped close to the line
However Nick Young was rewarded for his industry in the mauls when he poached the ball again and crashed over in unstoppable fashion for a well deserved try which Gibson converted.
Rowntrees finally showed some spirit and cohesion putting the Reds under pressure for a ten minute period. Though they came close on a couple of occasions the visitors defence held them out.
The Reds now re-asserted themselves and got back to the home tryline but wasted the opportunity of a pushover try. However from the next phase Sean Lally, back in action after seven months away, stole the ball to score. The Wetherby pack with a dominant front row of Frank Pitchford, Nick Young and Stu Wrigglesworth frequently pushed Rowntrees off their own ball with ease.
Similarly the line outs were ruled by the impressive Paul Jefferson who won a ball and set up a rolling maul for the pack to score a try.
From the re-start Wetherby moved the ball well across the backs before Myles Oates chipped over the defence for winger Ben Dalby to gather and score and Gibson to add the goal.
Rowntrees rather bizarrely had the last laugh when their fly half dropped a good goal to open their account in the final minute!
Wetherby can be well pleased with their display of running rugby and good support work which put them clear at the top of the league by 3 points. They go to Doncaster to play Adwick next week.
