Wetherby way too good for West Park

Wetherby way too good for West Park

Stephen Hoather27 Mar 2017 - 18:07

"I'll try and remember to defend the tryline this time!" - Danny Warden

The nicest day of the year so far gave a good grounding for a day to bring struggling West park to the Grange Park fortress. And what better way to celebrate than to have guest editor Harry Kaye put pen to paper.

With Harry Kaye receiving a red card last week for “back chat” he was out of the starting squad. His punishment? Being forced to hand out match programmes with himself as the cover photo. Liam Hogan was also out due to a poorly thumb and with Johnny Day on holiday getting loose as usual, Andrew Trotman, Chris Atkinson and Jack Kaye replaced them.

The day started with doubts about James Greenwood being able to play due to the bright sunshine, luckily he had his factor 50 ready. Alex Dus kicked off to West park with Billy Cale deciding to jump and compete for the ball for a change, Cale took the ball nicely and gave Wetherby a good platform to attack with early on. In the lovely sunshine Wetherby's backs seemed to be on fire cutting shapes all over the park. The West Park defence was firm and held them out, with possession and territory going all Wetherbys way for the first 20 minutes. West Park gave a penalty 35m out, and skipper Myles Oates ordered Alex Dus to have a go at goal… this meant if Alex Dus gets the kick he’ll play well for the rest of the game and if he doesn’t he’ll sulk for the next 60 minutes. With his new Andy Goode like frame, Alex Dus struck the ball with perfection and it sailed over. 3-0.

As in ordinary Wetherby fashion when they feel like the game is going to be easily won they’ll do everything in their power to make it is hard as possible for them selves. From the kick off West Park turned the ball over and began a passage of their own pressure. Fortunately good defence from Donny Thornberry (Tom Edwards) and the meatball (George Gilbert) made it hard for Park to make too much territory. With continuous pressure from the visitors they gained themselves a penalty under the sticks (probably something to do with Mattie Chappel in one of those horrible looking ruck things). 3-3.

Wetherby kicked off back to west park and once again Billy Cale was proving that white men can jump, channeling his inner Woodie Harrelson to steal the ball back. Wetherby were getting more and more dominant in the scrums with Scott Wallis, Mattie Chappel and Elliott Griffiths driving their opposite men back 5 yards every scrum. With continuous penalties from West Park this gave the ref little option but to send the visiting fly-half off the field for 10 minutes. West Park's 10 had been their best player for the duration of the first half, which gave wetherby more confidence going forward. With a penalty 5 metres out wetherby opted for the scrum and although going forward and likely to score, Chris Atkinson hit Rob Adair at full tilt for the iceberg to go over for the try, Alex Dus adding the 2. 10-3.

West Park hit back 10 minutes before half-time with a good driving maul from the lineout to bring the game closer, and give an intriguing second half with the game all square at the break.

HT: Wetherby 10-10 West Park

The second half saw second-row-converted-to-fly-half-converted-to-centre Danny Warden convert back to fly half to start the second half. At least it was a change from full-back, where his twenty minute stint in the second team saw him defending the dead ball line as the opposition scored the try five yards in front of him!

The second half started with two quick consecutive trys from Myles Oates. I can't really remember how he scored them, but presumably he just ran past everyone like he usually does, then slid back under Shannon's thumb where he isn’t seen till the following saturday. 24-10.

Wetherby cranked up the gears and scored another couple of hard running trys from the usual suspects of George Gilbert and Rob Adair, as the latter crossed for his second of the afternoon. What a player, no wonder he went viral on social media! 38-10

With 30 minutes to go Billy Cale came off the pitch with bad ribs, however I’m pretty sure he was simply missing his girl friend. To be fair if I was punching as much as he is, and with me standing on the sidelines, I wouldn’t let her out of my sight either. This injury meant a big loss as it also meant Mr Ego Jack Kaye had to return to the field after 3 months injured. As he's an awful spectator I was sick of listening to him for the last 3 months, so it was nice to see him away from the fans if only for our sake. Can't be too sure how his team mates felt on the pitch however.

With the game coming to an end Wetherby's back 3 were playing some very open rugby. Barney Roberts and Andrew Trotman were making space and beating their opposite men every time they had the ball. Jack Kaye made a big impact off the bench scoring under the sticks from a mistake from the West Park backs for his first touch of the ball. Jack Kaye then had another chance from a great cross-field kick, and having taken on one man and carried another over the line all he had to do was place the ball. Jack being Jack obviously he didn’t do that and decided to drop it instead. Almost as bad as intercepting the ball and running 80 metres only to trip over your own feet isn’t it Jack?? 45-10

Luckily Jack's only friend Chris Atkinson was having a cracking game and gave a neat box kick for Jack to get hold of to score from (he also knocked that on but the referee didn't spot this one). The final bit of pressure was added as George Gilbert broke off another dominant scrum and grab the fourth brace of the match. What a set of jug avoiders! Dussy missed the extras on both tries for his only two missed kicks all game.

Final score 55 - 13

MOTM – Rob - Think his mum paid Danny again

DOTD – Jack, dropped the ball on the line twice.
