Wetherby win in the steel city

Stephen Hoather7 Dec 2016 - 13:35

"Exactly the same starting line-up as last week!" - Coach Nick Oates, to a team missing two players from last weeks starting line-up.

Wetherby travelled to Sheffield on Saturday in search of a victory to keep their 50% record on the right track and continue their one game on, one game off approach to the season. Sheffield Medics were at the foot of the table but were not to be taken lightly. Preparation wasn't brilliant thanks to Scotty Wallis advising everyone it only took 20 minutes to get there. Maybe the way you drive Scottie!!

Wetherby started brightly again and only had two minutes to wait before being treated to an Elliott Lloyd Kinsey Griffiths special as he bust through a tackle, stepped the covering defender and carried the Medics full back at arms length to score from half-way. The only thing he didn't end up doing was converting it, as the merciful coaches allowed Billy Cale another chance despite the best kickers at the club being in the front row. 0-7.

Wetherby continued their fast start to the game, and were treated to a second try as Andrew Trotman found himself opposing a winger with an equal disdain for contact rugby as Andrew, as he allowed trotman to skip down the wing for the games second try. 0-12.

Sheffield definitely had their moments of pressure in the match, and responded well when Wetherby complacently failed to clear their lines. The pressure amounted in a penalty for Sheffield Medics after interference from Scotty. Lightning quick on country roads in his car, but not so quick to vacate a tackle area. 3-12.

The Wetherby scrum was dominant, and neither line-out was put under any real pressure, which allowed the visitors to pile more pressure onto the Sheffield defence. After some heavy forward carries from George Gilbert and Steve Hoather, Mattie Chappel forced his way over the line to return to his favourite place - laying on his belly. 3-19.

As the game began to open up, Wetherby had five minutes where they began to piece together some good rugby. The centre partnership of Jonny Day and Ed Blackwell were putting together shapes reminiscent of the old Jonny. The irresponsible, fun one with a penchant for kitchen staff and techno. As often seems to happen in the back line, Myles Oates benefited off somebody else's hard work to sneak in for a try. 3-24.

Sheffield forged a mini resurgence before half time and were beneficiaries of some weak Wetherby tackling around the fringes. Too many chest high tackles around the guards were undoing the big hits coming in from the back row of George Gilbert, Tom Edwards and Harry Johnson in the midfield. Sheffield forced their way over before half time to tighten the game up.

Half time: Sheffield Medics 10 - 24 Wetherby.

The second half started off in a scrappy manner, but the open game started to allow Wetherby to show their flair. Trotman sliced through the middle before being given space on the outside to once again do all the hard work for Myleypoo, and give him his second score of the day. 10-36.

The forwards continued to dominate at scrum time but were inaccurate with their driving maul. When a driving mail failed in Sheffield's 22, Mattie Chappel was present once again as a gust of wind from behind put his ears to full mast and crashed over the try-line with the vigour of that boat in Speed 2. 10-43.

When Sheffield did pile the pressure on , they pressed hard and Tom Edwards succumbed to being given a Yellow Card for a high shot. Down to 14 men Wetherby were fortunate to have the educated boot of Steve Hoather to get them out of trouble. After countless terrible attempts by Jack Radcliffe at box kicking out of trouble, Steve took over and sent a kick into touch in Sheffields half from his own 22. A real touch of class.

The resulting pressure on the line-out gave the Wetherby backs room to manoeuvre and some sharp work by the centres again allowed Trotman free. Once again he hustled down the left wing like he was being chased by a bookmaker and snuck in the corner for his hat-trick. 10-48.

On Sheffield's last big foray into Wetherby territory they conceded a penalty. Hoather took it quickly and flicked a pass out of the back door to Gibson who made the hard yards through the middle before giving a gift of a try by passing inside. Guess who got another gift. Just guess. Yep, that's right, Myles Oates again did nothing but steal the glory at the end and finished the game with one of the most undeserved hat-tricks I've ever seen. 10-55.

With the final whistle almost among us, there was just enough time to prove one of this Wetherby side's oldest adages; If the game was played without a ball, Tom Edwards would be an international. Tom burst through the midfield and was one on one with the fullback. Absolutely clueless, he stopped, turned right the way around looking for support and then dropped the ball right in front of him. Poor lad.

Full time: Sheffield Medics 10 - 55 Wetherby.

MoM: Andrew Trotman - the magician showed his full bag of tricks, including his disappearing hands as he dropped the ball for his fourth try of the day.

DoD: Tom Edwards - A tough call as he played brilliantly but cards must be punished, and the less said about that knock on the better!
