It has been almost three whole calendar years since, Wetherby last lost at Grange Park, in a Yorkshire Four clash against Stocksbridge, but the Red's were taken out this past weekend against a well organised and slick Pontefract side.
The Red's started brightly and had the majority of possession during the opening 10 minutes of the game, however they could not break the Pontefract line. Finally the referee awarded a penalty for offside and Alex Dus slotted the three points.
Pontefract didn't look back after this point however and quickly regained possession from the restart. Ponte's backs were able to open the Wetherby defense and the winger outpaced the Red's defense to score under the posts.
The next Ponte score came from a line out around half way, with a 50m break that was finished by the Ponte back row. The conversion was missed. After 23 mins the score was 3-12.
Ponte soon after converted a penalty as the Red's did not roll away in the tackle.
Wetherby's line out was struggling and soon after and during some pressure allowed Ponte in again to make the score 22-3 at the stroke of half time.
The Red's came out at Ponte with renewed intent in the second half but could not get past the Ponte line. Wetherby were unlucky to not be awarded a couple of penalties at the scrum, before turning over a penalty themselves to allow Ponte to clear there lines.
Ponte then scored again, after a quick tap penalty from their own 15m allowed them to go the full length of the field to add another converted score, before another well worked try from their dominant lineout and a couple of phases added the final score of the game on 80 minutes to make the final score 36-3.
Wetherby will need to improve drastically before they take on table toppers Moortown in 2 weeks time. The Red's have a week off next week, which should help alleviate the injury crisis they are currently facing.
