First Half
Wetherby started brightly and after a fast flowing move down the right wing, Olly Walters was high tackled by the last defender resulting in a penalty try and a Phoenix yellow card (7-0). This early try was followed quickly by a Will Blakey try, converted by Charlie Yates as Wetherby took early control of the game (14-0). After a missed penalty from the visitors, they pounced on a loose clearing kick and broke down the right hand side. A last ditch tackle by George Grafton was adjudged to be high, resulting in a yellow card and penalty try as the referee remained consistent with his earlier decision (14-7).
The home side were then the beneficiary of two missed knock-ons as tries Rob Adair and Fred Roberts extended the home side's lead off the back of some good fortune, with both tries converted (28-7). Doncaster then had a period of good pressure in the Wetherby 22, only to be met with some ferocious defence. After forcing the visitors back 30 metres, the ball squirted out of a ruck for young scrum half Oli Carr to scoop up and run the length of the field for a converted try (35-7).
Wetherby then entered their best spell of the game, whipping the ball from one wing to another and keeping hold of the ball brilliantly as the game's best try was finally finished off by Ollie Walters in the corner, well converted by Yates (42-7). This was shortly followed up by another fantastic flowing move as the backs combined to put away debutant Connor Campling for a try with only his second touch of the ball after coming on from the bench, again converted well by Yates.
Half-time: Wetherby 49-7 Doncaster Phoenix
Second Half
Wetherby started the second half brightly, and found inroads through the middle of the park before finally finding Cam Briggs out wide who took Wetherby past the half century, with Yates missing his only conversion of the day (54-7). After a scrappy bit of play in the Wetherby half, the ball dropped loose just outside the Wetherby 22 and was scooped up by Cal Donnelly who galloped away from 70 yards to score under the posts, converted again by Yates (61-7). Despite the scoreline slipping away from them, the visitors refused to die and took advantage of some complacency and skill errors from the home side to have a period of sustained pressure. Wetherby worked hard in defence but Doncaster Phoenix started to play with a freedom that hadn't been seen from them before in the match. A quick penalty near the Wetherby line saw Fred Roberts yellow carded for being offside, before Doncaster were awarded a second penalty try for an offence at the scrum (61-14). From the resulting kick-off Doncaster broke again and a high tackle from Fred Taylor saw the home side reduced to 13 men.
The visitors used their man advantage to batter away at the Wetherby line and finally scored an unconverted try in the corner (61-19). Wetherby returned to a full contingent but in wet conditions, and with the light quickly fading away, both sides played out fifteen minutes of drab rugby with no further score in the game.
