Wetherby bounce back against Selby

Stephen Hoather10 Nov - 11:30

Wetherby arrest a slump in form with a good victory against a strong Selby side

First Half
Selby came out of the blocks quickly and after charging down and early clearing kick, they scored the opening try of the game as Number 8 Antun Wilson scored from the back of a maul for an unconverted try (0-5). The home side kicked into life and after repeated efforts to rash over the Selby line were thwarted, the ball was flung out-wide to Mackenzie Scurr who levelled proceedings with an unconverted try (5-5). Wetherby continued with their period of pressure and kept possession well as some strong forward play was rewarded with a try out wide from Harvey Ward, with the conversion again going missing (10-5).
Selby made a change and it was a familiar face who sparked their response. Former Wetherby favourite Liam Hogan off-loaded well for Selby Captain Alex Webster to race free and score under the posts, with fly-half Ben Poskitt adding the extras (10-12). Almost immediately, Wetherby struck back as they again found Scurr in space on the left wing, who finished an unconverted try well in the far corner (15-12). In a theme for the game, the momentum swung again as the Selby forwards punched holes in the Wetherby defence, creating space for their winger Dan Evans to score an unconverted try shortly before half time.
Half time: Wetherby 15-17 Selby

Second Half
The home side started the second half brightest, and it was Harvey Ward who looked the brightest. A break from deep sparked a threatening attack, which created space on the other wing for Mackenzie Scurr to score his third try in the corner, again unconverted (20-17). Wetherby continued to play with ambition as the impressive back row of Rob Adair, Freddie Roberts and Cam Briggs started punching holes in the defence. This time the space opened up on the right hand side as Olly Walters dotted over in the corner, for the fifth unconverted Wetherby try of the game (25-17).
Selby were never going to go quietly and responded well through their best period of play of the match, scoring a well worked try finished by replacement Noah Athraby, converted by Poskitt (25-24). With the game now finely in the balance, Wetherby noticeably shifted up a gear and soon found themselves on the attack again. The ball found its way out to Scurr again who swerved and stepped his way around three defenders to run in a fantastic try under the posts, this time crucially converted by Charlie Yates (32-24). Despite Selby's best efforts to get back into the game, Wetherby managed the final ten minutes of the game perfectly and a late Charlie Yates penalty secured a much needed victory.
Full-time: Wetherby 35-24 Selby
