First Half
Wetherby opened the scoring in the 3rd minute as Josh Draper forced his way over from close range, converted by Charlie Yates (0-7). After weathering a brief storm, Wetherby scored a cracking try as they moved the ball width-to-width for Myles Oates to dot down an unconverted try (0-12). Pontefract rode off the back of some Wetherby ill-discipline to crash over the line through their captain Matthews (5-12) before an immediate response through the electric pace of debutant Jack Wilson (5-19). Wetherby found themselves under pressure again before half-time and conceded another try out wide to Pontefract winger Ketteridge.
Half Time: Pontefract 10-19 Wetherby
Second Half
The second half started evenly as both sides traded penalties (13-22) before Pontefract found themselves crashing over the Wetherby line through their second row Rogers (20-22). Another nice attacking move saw Wetherby kick in behind again as George Grafton regathered before scoring an unconverted try (20-27). Pontefract responded almost immediately with an impressive driving maul breaching the Wetherby defences for replacement Mawson to score a crucially unconverted try (25-27)! Pontefract came close to taking the lead as they dropped the ball over the line but Wetherby were able to hold out for the last ten minutes and take a hard-earned victory.
Full Time: Pontefract 25-27 Wetherby
