It was a top of the table clash between the two teams, and a chance for Wetherby to put some daylight between them or Goole to put them selves top.
Goole were the home team for the game, so Wetherby traveled with a similar team to the previous week.
The pitch had slight water patches and the weather was windy which would not suite either team who both like to play fast rugby.
The game kicked off with Goole having the strong wind in there favor the first half and receiving the ball. They gathered the ball well, however when they tried to use the ball through their backline, and quick rushed defence from Wetherby made them spill the ball. A kick up the field from Wetherby turned the Goole defence, and Wetherby forced the scrum on the 5m line with their feed.
The first scrum of the game commenced and it was a big factor throughout the whole game, as Wetherby’s pack leading from the front 3 pushed the opposition back in all. This scrum being so close to their try line meant there was no other outcome but try time . The try coming within the first couple of minutes from the no.8 ladies man Will Dutton.
Conor Sheridan kicked the conversion 0-7.
Goole rushed back up to half way and kicked deep, Wetherby gathered and had to try run the ball out as the wind was ferocious. Goole's defence held up and they gained a penalty under the posts. 3-7.
When the game restarted, more similar penalties were given away by Wetherby so they found them selves back in their own half once again and another penalty to Goole came, closing the gap to a point 6-7.
Wetherby were not letting their heads go down as they knew the wind was going to be a big factor in the game, but the same issue happened and a slightly further out penalty occurred. However a let off for Wetherby when the ball was dragged wide keeping the scores at the same. Wetherby gained the ball from the 22 meter restart, and when Goole's tackler didn’t release, Wetherby had a penalty on their own 22 which Rob Adair took quickly and set the Wetherby backs sprinting down the field, with Myles Oates breaking the line and passing to Jack Kaye he looked destined to score. With a good covering defence from Goole he had to use Conor Sheridan who had been trying to keep up the whole distance, who went under the posts 6-14.
Wetherby from here were looking strong and with scrums being so dominant to Wetherby, Goole struggled to get much ball. However with too many penalties been given, it was Tom Bottomley who had to take a 10 minute break in the sin bin.
Wetherby had to last these 10 minutes, which would also bring us to half time, and in fact it was Wetherby that stayed on the front foot, when a box kick by veteran Nick Oates sent Jack Kaye down the field to gather the kick and offload to Tom Edwards. A high tackle meters from the try line gave Wetherby the penalty and an easy decision to go for the scrum. This turned out to be the right choice when Will Dutton got over for his second try of the game. The conversion attempt could not be converted making the score at half time 6-19 in Wetherby's favour..
Half time 6-19
The second half went on the way and Wetherby were back to 15 men, and had the wind in their favor although it had died down. Early on a consecutive amount of penalties resulted in them having to go down to 14. Although in their own, half Wetherby opted for the scrum on the center of the halfway line. A well worked back move created the over lap for Andrew Trotman which he had only the full back then to beat, which with his brilliant step he did and got in for the bonus point try in the corner 6-26.
With Goole still down to 14 men Wetherby could find the gaps and made many yards through strong runs from the forwards, to which Goole gave away a penalty for the tackler not releasing. Conor Sheridan opted for the kick at goal which he achieved 6-29.
At the 60 minute point in the game, both teams started to use substitutions. Although the game had seemed won Goole kept their heads up and with a quick turn over ball, they spread the ball out wide and eventually from a chipped kicked they gathered the ball for their first try of the game 11-29.
With only minutes left to play the scores seemed to have been settled, but with both teams having put everything into it, defence were getting tired and that is the only reason why Myles Oates was aloud to score 11-36
Final score 11-36
