Wetherby v Old modernians

Wetherby went into this fixture with a few key players not available due the world cup and the grand final, oh and two went on a couple’s retreat and went to center parks. This meant that selection wasn’t as straight forward, but it showed that wetherby had depth in selection with a strong team still put out.
The last time these two teams met mod’s came off second best in a cup game clash last season so Wetherby knew their opposition would be up for it.
The game kicked off at 1500 and it was a slow start from Wetherby with mod’s having a lot of possession, they gained multiple penalties in the opening 20 minutes. 3 of these penalties were goal attempts but all were just pushed wide. This was a let off for wetherby and kept the scores at 0-0.
Wetherby switched on towards the end of the first half and the forwards started showing their strength by dominating in the scrums. This gained territory for the home team and when a scrum was gained 5 meters out from the opponents try line the forwards marched mod’s back and gave Wetherby the first try of the game when scrum half Harry Kaye had the simple job of putting the ball down. The kick couldn’t be converted 5-0

Half time 5-0

The second half begun and with neither team getting a grip of the game it was still all to play for. Not long into the second half Wetherby played to their strengths once again by using the dominant scrum. It was gorgeous George Gilbert’s turn this time when the scrum marched over the try line and he dropped onto the ball making the scores 12-5 when Danny Warden added the extra.
Wetherby had stepped it up a gear and with a break from the hot stepper Steve Hoather, Wetherby were straight back up the pitch. Then with a quick pick up from scrum half the line was broken from the side of the ruck and a 2 on 1 was created where Tom Edwards was put over. 19-0
Old modernians came back and with some week defence in the back line of wetherby, mod’s got over for their first try. 19-7
The game was becoming more open and gaps were been made, Wetherby decided to pick up the pace and when Alex Dus was trapped in a ruck, the big prop Elliott Griffiths went appeared at stand off and broke the line and assisted Jack Kaye in the bonus point try. 24-7
Wetherby became complacent and when mod’s got turn over ball on the half way line they broke the line and scored another try narrowing the scores. 24-14
The forwards of Wetherby seemed the difference in the game and another scrum was heading towards the opponents try line when George Gilbert picked the ball up 20 meters out and broke a tackle to get his second of the game ‘meatball problem’. 31-14
The game was out of reach for mod’s but they still defended well and never let Wetherby have any easy points. Mod’s got them selves into a dangerous position for wetherby by a move didn’t come off well and gave wetherby a chance to clear their lines with a 22meter drop out. Step up Danny Warden, who booted the ball at the forward stood meters in front of him and then when making a tackle his week bone in his arm broke ending his game.
With only 10 minutes left to play a déjà vu moment happened when Elliot appeared at stand off and once again set the growing 14.4 stone winger Jack Kaye up. 38-14

Final score Wetherby 38-14 Old modernians
