Wetherby run out 36-26 winners at Northallerton

'If you don't win then you lose.' B Mason (2015)

Wetherby and Northallerton met three games ago in the the Yorkshire Silver Trophy final, which Wetherby won and traveled up to Northallerton knowing North would be out to revenge the loss.

It was a beautiful sunny day for free flowing rugby in North Yorkshire and the red and white hoops of Wetherby traveled to Northallerton with a strong team which included Rob Adair making his first appearance of the season, after spending time working out with The Terminator in California.

Wetherby won the toss and chose to play downhill for the first half. Northallerton kicked off an immediately showed Wetherby there intent of trying to keep the ball within the forwards to put pressure on Wetherby's pack. Luckily the reds realised this early on and when gaining possession of the ball, span it out to the back line, who gained ground with every touch of the ball. It wasn't long until winger Jack Kaye received the ball on the half way line with space and with only the scrum half to beat, went over for the first try of the game in the corner. Danny Warden couldn't add the conversion, making the score 0-5 to Wetherby.

The game continued in the same vein with Wetherby holding there own in the forwards and often turning the ball over against the head in the scrums. This then gave the backs another chance to run at the opposition, who continued to make great ground. With a quick play of the ball and some fantastic hands from all involved, including the front five, saw Alex Dus go through the opponents line and assist Myles Oates for the second try of the game which Danny Warden converted.

Wetherby continued to have a lot of possession of the ball and now was the forwards turn to show what they could do. A few pick and go phases got Wetherby within touching distance of the line and when Elliott Griffiths had a go from 5 meters out, there was no stopping him. Danny Warden added his second conversion of the game, which brought the half time score to 0-19 to the reds.

Wetherby went into half time smiling and when the game restarted the smiles continued when another break through the line from the inside center Myles Oates. With the full back catching him he then switched with the red hot winger Will Jefferson who put Wetherby in for the fourth try of the game sealing the bonus point. Danny Warden converted to bring the score to 26-0.

Northallerton's heads didn't go down however, as they struck back for their first try of the game almost straight from kick off, after their number 9 got quick ball from a ruck and went around the edge to make the score 7-26.

Wetherby made some interchanges shortly after, which this seemed to be the right decision, as moments after the changes were made the ball got kicked to Conor Sheridan, who had only just come on and he did what he does best and threaded his was through Northallerton's defence. Unfortunately for him he could he couldn't add the extra making the scores 7-31.

Wetherby took their foot of the pedal for the majority of the rest of the game and North took their chances. In quick succession by using their hill advantage and big forwards they scored two similar tries making the score a much closer 21-31.

Wetherby realising that the game had not yet been won, kicked the ball deep into the opponents half from the restart and made them play from there. North making little ground looked to kick away possession, however the clearance was poor and put Wetherby on the attack in the Northallerton half. With about 15 minutes left to play and forwards giving the back line quick ball Andrew Trotman spotted a gap and put a bit more distance between the two teams again 21-36.

Northallerton continued to press Wetherby and eventually got over the line for a final time, utilizing the pick and go drive, their forwards got over for one more try to bring the score closer to 26-36.

With 10 minutes still left to play Wetherby had to defend much better to not let the game slip away. North were getting ever so closer to Wetherby's line once again with their forwards something had to be done. Wetherby switched back on and started putting tackles in giving North no more yards. A big hit from George Gilbert made the opponents spill the ball and give Wetherby possession. Wetherby decided to kick the ball down field and see what North could do from within their own 22. The clock then ran down and with last play been called and North opted to kick the ball down the field. Wetherby could finally breathe again as they kicked the ball out to hear the sweet sound of the final whistle and a victory with the final score 26-36 in the Reds favour.

Wetherby take on Leeds Medics and Dentists next week who were recently relegated from Yorkshire Division Two.
