Wetherby start yorkshire 3 campaign with a bang.
Wetherby started there 2015/16 campaign with a trip to stocksbridge. Stockbridge beat wetherby both games back in 2014 whilst in Yorkshire 4, So a sense of revenge was certainly on the cards aswell as wetherby wanting to continue there fantastic unbeaten run.
Wetherby travelled to stockbridge as the underdogs a strong end to the previous season for stockbridge ment they werent to be underestimated, with travel with a full squad, but a flat tire on route saw 4 of the wetherby elite left stranded with no hope of rescue but luckily enough captain Danny warden was on call to save the day.
Wetherby seemed very stale in the pre - game warm up, a sense of pre - match nerves was in the air and even the inspiration of captain Danny warden couldn't get the lads going, leadership was needed but no where to be seen.
Wetherby started the game in the same fashion, poor handling saw Stockbridge start the game strong, there powerful forward runners created a great platform for the stocksbridge backs to test wetherby. Stocksbridge 12 looked a strong runner and caused a few problems early. A silly penalty given against Wetherby saw stocksbridge take an early lead 3-0.
Stocksbridge continued to apply the pressure and a great dummy line run from the Stockbridge 12, saw the wetherby winger Jack the pain train kaye was caught napping and collided with the opposition only to be left wounded and have to retire to the sideline. This shuffled the Wetherby back line around which allowed the new and improved Alex duss to make an appearance of the bench. After a long summer in the gym Alex duss looked fresh and ready to do some damage. Dussy made an instant impact when a stolen ball went wide, good hands and pace saw the wetherby back line show a glimmer of class, great support work saw Alex duss run in from 15 metres to score the first try of the game. With Danny warden adding the extras.
More mistakes from wetherby kept Stockbridge in the game, some more powerful running from the stocksbridge 12 saw centre Myles Oates aka 'the Unit' struggling to tackle getting sat down 2/3 times, perhaps more heavy lifting in the gym was needed from the young centre, this wasn't the lights of yorkshire 4 anymore. A strong Stockbridge pack managed to dominate the scrums in the first half scoring 2 trys from walking scrums, it looked like it was going to be long day for the Wetherby pack.
Some strong individual work from Prop Elliot the brick Griffiths saw him steam role his way over the try line, and some great foot work from second row Tom Bottomley to open up the defense allowed Myles Oates to exploit a gap and run 30 metres to score a try making up for his earlier mistakes. Danny warden added the extras.
Stockbridge lead 22-21 at half time
After a strong stern word from coach mike hicks, Wetherby came out the second half all guns blazing, the pace and effort from the wetherby players increased dramaticly. Strong forward play lead by Tom hicks and George Gilbert saw Wetherby dominate the next 20 minutes of the second half. George Gilbert showed some great strength and pace to break the line to run in 2 trys for the red and whites. Securing the bonus point.
Wetherby now dominating the scum secured clean ball for Wetherbys back line, some surprisingly good passing from fly half Danny warden allowed the Wetherby backs the chance to show off there prowess by exsucuting a great move that was finished in the corner by will Jefferson. Captain Danny warden couldn't add the extra, a real reflection of his performance that day.
The inspired Wetherby performance was dampened by the ref, as a charged down Danny warden kick was 'supposedly touched first by a Stockbridge hand when it was clearly Andrew the peacock Trotman that had downward pressure first. This really influenced wetherby to turn up the gears as the onslaught of Stockbridge continued. A following 4 tries were scored by Rowan Griffith, Tom Bottomley Graham bulmer and tom hicks, a great second half performance from Wetherby saw them win 68-22. Wetherby seen as the underdogs in this game have certainly stamped there foot down in Yorkshire 3.
Next week Wetherby entertain fellow promoted Halifax.
