Wetherby defeat Wibsey

Wetherby defeat Wibsey

Sean Lally28 May 2011 - 22:01

Wetherby run in 12 tries against Wibsey

Whilst extending their excellent run to 10 league games without defeat Wetherby chose to introduce to first team football 2 more young players from their successful colts side.
Both Alex Mudd and Reece Hackney acquitted themselves brilliantly. Alex playing at fly half showed great composure and skill which included one delightful chip kick to the corner leaving winger Luke

Wraith the easiest of tasks to score. Revelling in the good service from Mudd , Reece Hackney playing at centre bagged a hat trick of tries on his debut. He showed great pace and guile which was too much for the Wibsey defence.

It took 10 minutes for Wetherby to score the first of their 12 tries but they scored 2 more in the next 4 minutes. With Paul Savage and Reece Hackney making the breaks Myles Oates profited with 3 first half tries
and by half time the Reds had scored 27 points without reply. In the second period they notched up a further 7 tries and James Gibson kicked 5 conversions. The Wetherby scrummage was far superior to the visitors
and the home forwards were often involved in making good gains with some great support work and offloading. Paul Jefferson and Mick Youlden were at the heart of things and Nick Young was regularly in action at the breakdown. Winger Luke Wraith scored his first hat trick for the club, one of which was made by Ben Dalby who fielded a clearance kick in his own half and set off down the field evading several tackles before throwing a great long pass to Wraith for him to score. Myles Oates scored a second hat trick in the second half. Not surprisingly he was awarded Man of the Match for the extraordinary feat of scoring 6 tries in a game.

Wetherby are well placed in third position in the league only 2 points behind the joint leaders and they have the best points scoring difference in the league. They have averaged over 50 points in each of their last 3 games. The game was watched by the President of the Yorkshire RFU Richard Matthews who said “It was a pleasure to see good flowing moves resulting in excellent tries which is what rugby is about”

Wetherby travel to York to play Nestle Rowntrees next week in a league game.
