With a week off from cup and league action for the 1st team, and the 2nd teams game being cancelled by the opposition late on Friday, Wetherby took the chance to give several players a rest and fielded and mixed squad of players from the 1s and 2s against a Stanley Rodilians team that is riding high in second place in the league below Wetherby.
From the kick off Stanley Rodilians piled on the pressure and looked in a good position in the Wetherby 22 when a loss pass went to ground and with Connor, playing in the centres this week, being the first man to the ball there was only going to be one result once he had the ball safely picked up as he sped 80 meters down the pitch to touch down under the posts allowing him to add an easy conversion. Rods again applied more pressure and for the first time this season the rearranged Wetherby pack got to feel what it is like to be pushed backwards in the scrum, despite this Wetherby started to look like the higher placed team and started to apply some pressure themselves working their way into the Rods 22 and when the ball found its way to the right wing Will Jefferson should great pace and strength to score a good quality wingers try in the corner. The conversion was missed 12-0 to Wetherby.
Rods did not look like giving up and from some pressure in the Wetherby 22 they got the reward for their effort with a well worked move resulting in a try in the corner, with the strong wind not surprisingly the conversion was missed leaving the score line 12-5 to Wetherby. Will Jefferson then scored again in the right corner to regain the 12 point lead. Wetherby then switched play to the other wing allowing Barney Roberts to score another trade mark wingers try. Following this try Rods were offside at the resulting kick off and from the resulting scrum on the half way line fast ball was fed to Connor who ghosted his way past several players in a jinxing run to score under the posts allowing him to get his second conversion.
This looked like it would be the last score of the half but Rods had other ideas as they showed strong defence to force a Wetherby error which their forward took full advantage of forcing their way over but with the conversion missed this left the score line at Half time as 29-10 to Wetherby.
With the wind now behind them Wetherby looked to try and open up the game, occasionally being a bit too adventurous as some early chances went begging. The game started to settle down a bit and after quarter of an hour Wetherby’s Dave Adair bagged the first try of the half which was converted to give Wetherby a 36-10 lead.
With 20 minutes of the game left Liam Hogan made a trade mark barnstorming run going round through and even over four of the Rods would be defenders before releasing the supporting Will Jefferson who ran in for his hat trick. Shortly after a further Wetherby break lead to Liam himself forcing his way over in trade mark forward style to finish the scoring off for the day with the final scoreline being 46-10 to the reds.
