Wetherby could only manage to scrape together 15 players for their trip up the M1 to Brompton Park this weekend, to face Northallerton 2's in a friendly match.
Wetherby dominated the early exchanges, and were camped inside the Northallerton half for long periods of the first half. The reds had two chances to kick for points due to Northallerton infractions but decided to go for the corner. Each time this was to no avail.
With Northallerton reduced to 14 men with a player in the sin bin, Wetherby secured opposition line out ball on the edge of their own 22. The ball was shipped out wide to Jack Kaye, who started a great run. He was tackled about 30m out and the Wetherby pack did a great job to secure quick ball and send Robbie Hardy playing at fly half away. He did well to beat two tacklers to score in the corner. Robbie Hardy then added the extras from the kick from the touchline.
Northallerton started to pressure again with there full 15 on the field and started to pin Wetherby back int here own 22 with some great tactical kicks from there fly half. Wetherby defended solidly and managed to clear there own lines.
Just before half time both teams were reduced to 14 men, due to repeat infractions.
The second half kicked off with Northallerton on top. However the game failed to get going due to a lot of knockons and other infractions resulting in scrums. The game started to see a lot of off the ball incidents and petty arguments and the referee decided enough was enough and called a halt to the proceedings at around the 55 minute mark.
With Northallerton on top during the second half it would have been interesting to see how the final 25 minutes or so would have gone.
Wetherby will be disappointed in not turning there pressure into points to make this a more comfortable scoreline.
Next week Wetherby travel to Middleton to take on Leeds Corinthians in Yorkshire Four clash, kicking off at 2:15.
