Hard fought victories

Wetherby vs Selby U10s
Sunday 12 October 2014
Game A Andy’s Match

The match between Wetherby and Selby was eagerly awaited by all present. The lads didn’t seem too concerned by the cold, misty conditions, nor the wet underfoot. Parents came dressed in their jackets and scarves, prepared to stand and cheer their boys on for the duration of the match.
Both teams could field two teams and as it turned out, the two games took place at exactly the same time, which made for some inaccurate reporting. Having said that, I was assisted by James and Angus , who kept me posted with important match information.

Match 1 Referee: Andy
This match began with Selby having possession, as the ball moved down it was easily turned over by Wetherby, which resulted in some great passing between the boys and ultimately ending up in Harry’s hands, who then proceeded to turn on the afterburners and score a great try.
With the confidence growing, the boys began to play some enterprising rugby, with a good run by Charlie and then Matthew, followed by some great support play by Bradley, which led to him scoring a great try too.
George and Oliver showed great determination and ran with serious intent, with the ball finding its way to Harry who once again terrorized the opposition, but this time he was tackled and the ball was turned over by Selby. As it was passed down the line, Matthew seized on an interception opportunity and ran 40 metres to score a good try.
The second half started slowly with Wetherby, playing some rugby that lacked the fluency and confidence of the first half. A few missed tackles enabled Selby to take advantage and they punished Wetherby with a try of their own.
At the restart Wetherby once again found themselves lacking in direction and shape. As confidence lacked a little they found themselves on occasions guilty of sometimes running backwards and sidewards. Finally Harry seized the ball and ran straight at the opposition which resulted in a good solo effort.
Selby hit straight back and this seemed to start their motor as they started to really pass the ball nicely and consequently managed to score another try.
As the game tightened, the boys began to hold onto the ball, leading to rather solo efforts, rather than pass the ball like they had done at the start.
Harry scored another try, his third of the match before Christian and then Joe, his second, scored tries to finish off the match.
In summary it was a game of two halves, with the first half being played as a team, with great inter-passing and support play, only for the second half to become a scrappy affair, reliant on solo efforts and poor defence.
Luckily the boys had done enough in the first half and it was a relieved Wetherby that held on for a closely fought win.

Game 2: Referee Mark
Wetherby started as if they were on fire. Max put in some good tackles which resulted in Ollie scoring a good try. The boys were showing plenty of intent with Ben running hard and straight which was very pleasing to see. Fraser was working hard in the loose and when he got ball in hand he made good ground.
Max was really enjoying himself, putting his body on the line for the team and showing the boys how to tackle, he made a try saving tackle on the line as Selby made their first real attack.
The longer the game went on thought, the more Selby began to believe in themselves and they began to pass the ball nicely. Wetherby were hanging on and with the scores level at 2 a piece, Fraser managed to find the try line and score a nice try.
The second half began with Ben once again running hard and straight which resulted in another try for Wetherby. Unfortunately that was the last time Wetherby would score as the Selby lads took control of the game, playing some great running rugby. They had a fantastic well balanced runner that glided past and through our tackles and each time he got the ball. Selby ran in a number of tries as our defense let us down. But give credit to Selby, they played as a team and passed the ball, which led to them being deserved winners of the game.

Both games were played in a good sporting manner, it was tough hard rugby, but the boys had fun and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
