Wetherby Women beat West Park!

Billed as a double header with the 2nd XV, the team were looking forward to being able to have a proper post match social. Unfortunately, West Park couldn’t field an opposition for the men but this did not deter the team who were appropriately attired in their shit shirts and ‘not a cup’ drinking vessels.

Unfortunately, poor numbers also impacted on the women of West Park whose first team ended up having a lighter bench against Leicester Tigers to enable their second team to field a team of 11. While we were initially disappointed not to be able to play a full game, we were grateful for the efforts to ensure the fixture could be played.

Wetherby started strong and soon showed an early dominance in the scrum. This was soon capitalised on by scrum half Ellie Buck who sniped at the base to give Wetherby their first try under the sticks. Kira Lewis added the extras.

Unfortunately, the early dominance soon went against Wetherby after the referee decided to make the scrums uncontested due to injury concerns and a lack of West Park bench. This very much killed off a key part of Wetherby’s game and allowed West Park to be more competitive than the flow of the game suggested.

A game of cat and mouse then ensued with both teams scoring tries in very much a call and response pattern. Wetherby utilised the additional space on the pitch and shipped the ball to the backs well to enable Amber Bannon, Jess Baker and Shannon Little to all get over the try line, the latter scoring a hattrick. Thankfully, Wetherby had the edge thanks to Kira Lewis adding the points and they held on to win the game.
