A dominant scrum provided the platform for Wetherby to beat Ossett 36-7 in their Yorkshire Four opening fixture.

Last season's opener at Ossett was a victory for Ossett but the tables were turned with an emphatic victory at Grange Park.

Wetherby were superior both in the forwards and backs. The front row of Bradley Mason, Steve Hoather and Frank Pitchford were outstanding and at the first scrum Ossett were driven off their own ball which enabled Barney Roberts to score after 4 minutes. Thanks to this forward dominance winning yet another scrum the ball ended up with a Jack Kaye try wide out after a good handling movement which Connor Sheriden converted brilliantly.

Wetherby scored next from a penalty following the Referee issuing yellow cards when a player from each side had a 10 minute rest.
Ossett replied almost immediately when their scrum half took a quick tap penalty and jinked his way over, but the powerful Red's defence didn't allow the visitors any more points. Just before half time Connor Sheridan was held up over the line but from the ensuing scrum the Wetherby pack blew Ossett away and Nick Oates scored a pushover try to make the half time score 22 - 7.

The weather deteriorated in the second period making flowing rugby very difficult for both sides and from a high kick Barney Roberts capitalised on a mistake by the visitors full back to run in from 35 yards. Ossett had their best spell of the game now but Wetherby's uncompromising defence held out and in the 70th minute Rob Adair scored a great solo try from some distance out which Connor Sheriden converted.to take his tally to 4 out of 5.

A comprehensive win against good opposition. Coach Mike McHugh said after the game that he was delighted with the team which had achieved their objective of a bonus point win.
Next week Wetherby travel to Halifax who also won their opening game.
